The 25-year-old Sonal Dinusha has edged out England's Ollie Robinson and Bangladesh's Hasan Mahmud to be named the best cricketer of the month of August.
The International Cricket Council officially announced this the previous day (on the 17th). This is the first time Sonal Dinusha, who has played only 5 Test matches so far, has received such recognition.
Sonal Dinusha, who earned his Test cap against Bangladesh in June of last year, has a Test record of 606 runs in 9 innings across 5 matches, including 3 centuries and 2 half-centuries. Notably, 410 of those runs came in the two matches of the recently concluded Indian tour.
In that series he scored 100 runs in the first innings of the first Test in Galle and 84 runs in the 2nd innings, and thereafter, in the 2nd Test at the SSC grounds in Colombo, he made 103 runs in the first innings and 133 not out in the 2nd innings. Sonal Dinusha was also adjudged the player of that match.
He finished that series maintaining an average of 140.0, and the 133 not out Sonal Dinusha made in the 2nd innings of the 2nd Test also became the highest individual score of his Test career.
Sonal Dinusha's batting average in his Test career so far stands at 86.57, and he currently holds 24th place in the latest Test rankings.
Alongside Sonal Dinusha, the names of England's 32-year-old right-arm medium-pace bowler Ollie Robinson and Bangladesh's 26-year-old right-arm medium-pace bowler Hasan Mahmud had also been nominated for this award.
