ThePapareNews article

Featuring the second-highest run chase in the history of One-Day International cricket along with a host of other records, the Sri Lanka – England ODI that concluded at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Pakistan was the 5042nd One-Day International in the history of the game.

In a match that forced the cricket record books to be rewritten, the Sri Lankan players managed a 2-wicket victory with just one ball to spare, and that came while chasing a target of 430 runs.

Here is a note on the remarkable milestones of a match that warmed the hearts of Sri Lankan cricket fans as much as those of England's supporters.

430 : In this match Sri Lanka beat their opponents by chasing down the 430-run target the opposition had set. That became the 2nd highest successful chase in the history of One-Day International cricket.

The last time a Sri Lankan side had produced anything close to this was in 2006, when they chased down 322 runs against England themselves at Leeds to win.

114 : England captain Harry Brook claimed the distinction of recording the fastest double century in the history of One-Day International cricket.

That record had previously belonged to India captain Shubman Gill, for the innings he compiled off 117 balls against the West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati last September.

202 : The innings played by England captain Harry Brook in this match is the highest individual score by a batter in England's One-Day International history.

The previous holder of that record was Ben Stokes, with the 182 runs he made against New Zealand in 2023.

  • This innings by Harry Brook is also the highest score made by an England player in Pakistan. The record had previously been held by the current Sri Lanka coach Gary Kirsten, with the 188 runs he made in the United Arab Emirates during the 1996 ODI World Cup.
  • Harry Brook also claimed the record for the highest score by a batter who did not open the innings. Before this it belonged to Australia's Glenn Maxwell, for the unbeaten 201 he made coming in at No. 6 against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
  • The record for the highest score by a No. 4 batter also went to this Harry Brook innings. It had previously been held by the West Indies' Viv Richards, for the unbeaten 189 he made against England at Manchester in 1984.
  • The list of captains with an ODI double century now numbers four. Three of those captains are from India, and the newest addition comes from England.

  • Harry Brook's double century also became the first double century recorded by a player on the losing side.

Previously, the top entry on that list was the unbeaten 194 made by Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry against Bangladesh in 2009.

429/4 : This total by England is the highest score an England side has made against Sri Lanka. The previous record was the 357 for 3 they made at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo earlier this year.
