Sangeeth Cooray to lead Sri Lanka at Hong Kong Sixes

Sri Lanka CricketNews article

The Sports Ministry has approved a seven-member Sri Lanka squad for the 2026 Hong Kong Sixes cricket tournament, to be held in Hong Kong from October 30 to November 01.

Along with Sangeeth Cooray, the squad includes Sachitha Jayathilake, Ravindu Fernando, Vishen Halambage, Muditha Lakshan, Mowin Subasingha and Chamindu Wijesinghe. In addition to the captaincy, Sangeeth Cooray has been named as the wicketkeeper, while Mr Samantha Dodanwela will serve as team manager.

The Hong Kong Sixes, regarded as one of the fastest and most attractive formats in international cricket, will this time feature 12 countries. All matches of the tournament, which begins on October 30, will be played at the Tin Kwong Road Ground in Hong Kong.

Sri Lanka will compete in Group 'B' alongside Bangladesh and Scotland in this edition. The match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is scheduled for October 30, while the match against Scotland will be played on October 31.

Although the Sri Lanka team that won the Hong Kong Sixes title in 2024 could not defend that crown in 2025, they were able to win the 'Bowl' championship.

Having entered the tournament under the captaincy of Lahiru Madushanka, the Sri Lanka team had to play in the 'Bowl' round after losing their preliminary-round matches against Hong Kong and Bangladesh. Producing outstanding performances in that round, the Sri Lankan players beat Nepal by three wickets, the United Arab Emirates by 39 runs and India by 48 runs to qualify for the grand final. In the final against the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka secured a 21-run victory to claim the Bowl championship on that occasion.

Sri Lanka six-a-side squad – Sangeeth Cooray (captain), Sachitha Jayathilake, Ravindu Fernando, Vishen Halambage, Muditha Lakshan, Mowin Subasingha, Chamindu Wijesinghe, Mr Samantha Dodanwela (manager)
