The decisive battle for the Major Clubs Limited Overs Cricket Tournament title between Moors Sports Club and SSC is scheduled to be played tomorrow (11) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The day-night grand final is set to begin at 2.00 p.m., with both teams expected to engage in a fierce contest for this year’s Major Clubs Limited Overs title.
The preliminary round was played on a league basis, with Moors and SSC each contesting six matches. Both sides produced strong performances to qualify for the semi-finals, recording four outright wins and one first-innings victory apiece across those six matches.
SSC faced the formidable CCC in their semi-final and secured their place in the grand final with a narrow one-run victory after an intensely contested match. In the other semi-final, Moors advanced to the title clash by defeating Colts by 51 runs.
A notable feature of this year’s grand final is SSC’s rapid rise. Having competed in Tier ‘B’ last season, SSC earned promotion to the top division through their performances, and qualifying for the Major Clubs Limited Overs final at their first opportunity following that promotion is a remarkable achievement.
SSC captain Avishka Fernando says rising from Tier ‘B’ and achieving such success within a short period has given his team tremendous confidence. He also noted that consistently remaining among the wins throughout the tournament has further boosted the team’s confidence heading into the final.
The right-handed batter added that the final would by no means be easy, as Moors also boast several in-form players. He believes his team will therefore need to perform at a high level from the very start of the match.
Meanwhile, Moors have also reached the grand final after producing impressive performances in this year’s tournament. The fact that this is Moors’ first appearance in the final of a Major Clubs tournament since 2018 adds further significance to the contest.
Moors captain Pasindu Sooriyabandara says reaching a grand final after a long absence is an important achievement for the team. He pointed out that players stepping up at different stages throughout the tournament was a key reason behind their progress to the final.
Pasindu also says that, with every player in the side currently in good rhythm, his team is ready to pose the toughest possible challenge to SSC.
This year’s grand final will therefore pit a Moors side seeking a title after several years against an SSC team that has entered a championship battle immediately after earning promotion from Tier ‘B’. With players from both teams currently in good form, the contest between batters and bowlers—as well as the performances delivered at decisive moments—will be crucial in determining the champions.
Tomorrow will decide whether Moors or SSC claim the Major Clubs Limited Overs title in this day-night final under the floodlights at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
