Sri Lanka's premier club tournament becomes a four-day competition this season

Sri Lanka CricketNews article

The premier club cricket tournament organised by Sri Lanka Cricket is set to be held as a four-day competition for the first time in the 2026/27 season. Accordingly, 14 of the country's leading clubs are due to take part in the tournament, which runs from November 19 to January 20, 2027.

Turning this tournament, which until now has been a three-day competition, into a four-day one can be regarded as a structural change in Sri Lankan cricket. The change has been made on a recommendation from the newly appointed Sri Lanka Cricket transformation committee, and through it the longer format at club level is expected to be strengthened further.

A key aim of the move is to give local players an experience much closer to the format of international Test cricket. Accordingly, batters are expected to get a greater opportunity to develop the ability to build long innings, and bowlers to sustain their skills over longer periods.

The tournament will be held under two groups, with seven clubs included in each group.

With the introduction of the four-day format, there will be an opportunity to raise the level of competitiveness in club cricket in the country and to make a greater contribution to the process of identifying and developing the Test players needed by the national team. Colombo Colts Cricket Club won the title in last year's tournament.

Group A: Colts, NCC, Police, BRC, Kurunegala Youth, Badureliya and Nugegoda Sports and Welfare Club.

Group B: ACE Capital, Moors, CCC, Bloomfield, Panadura, Tamil Union and SSC.
